Meet Jennifer – Our Director, Health, Safety & Environment

Q1. What inspires/motivates you?

The drive to make sure people go home safely and that we leave the communities we work in better than we found them is what motivates me every day. Making a difference and creating meaningful impact is a big part of why I am at Jones. I value being in an environment where small shifts can create big impacts and where you can see those positive changes happening in real time. Seeing those efforts strengthen processes, support colleagues and contribute to a stronger culture is both energizing and exciting.

Q2. What inspired you to pursue a career in Health, Safety & Environment?

A loss of life at a worksite earlier in my career had a profound impact on me and ultimately propelled me to pursue a career in adult education and Health, Safety & Environment. That experience reinforced how important safety is and the lasting impact it can have on people, families and communities.

Every day, I have the opportunity to teach and, more importantly, to learn. Nothing is more fulfilling than knowing I play a small part in helping someone’s loved one return home safely at the end of the day. That sense of purpose continues to inspire me in my line of work.

Q3. What’s your favourite part of your job?

The people, hands down. I enjoy hearing their stories, learning about their rich history and understanding the ‘why’ behind the way they work safely. Every person brings a unique perspective, and taking the time to listen and learn from them makes the work meaningful. Those conversations often provide valuable insights and remind me that safety is deeply personal.

A close second would be the opportunity to be creative and solve problems. There is always a way to work safely, even if the path isn’t immediately clear. I find the process of investigating, asking questions and working through challenges to find the right solution both exciting and rewarding.

Q4. What are you most proud of?

Being able to go home at night and tell my sons about the great work we are doing is something I am incredibly proud of. I am part of a team that is making a difference and contributing to healthier, safer environments, with the hope of helping create a better future for the next generation and a healthier planet for them to grow up in.

Q5. What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?

I wish more people knew that Health, Safety & Environment plays an important role in helping teams move work forward effectively and efficiently. Working closely with HSE can streamline processes, uncover opportunities for improvement and create meaningful savings. When people feel safe and comfortable in their work environment, they perform at their best. Our goal is to collaborate, support teams and create solutions that strengthen both people and the work being done.

Q6. Safety and culture often go hand in hand. In your opinion, how do you help foster a strong safety culture?

I believe strong safety cultures begin with listening. Time on the floor should focus on learning before jumping to solutions. Taking the time to understand why things are done a certain way, what has been tried in the past and how people experience their work every day leads to stronger conversations and better outcomes. Creating new pathways and meaningful improvements starts with ensuring the people doing the work feel heard, involved and part of the process.

Safety belongs to everyone. A strong, sustainable culture grows when colleagues feel a sense of ownership and understand the role they play in keeping one another safe. Lasting change comes from working together and fostering an environment where people feel connected to the programs that support them.
